weekend diys | yarn chandeliers

I know you've seen these all around the web. They are so dreamy and seemed simple enough to recreate so I finally sat down and decided to do it this past weekend. Here's all you'll need:

1. Acrylic Yarn   2. Elmer's Glue   3. Corn Starch
4. Round Balloons   5. Small Pan for mixing
6. Vaseline   7. Pole/Stand for drying

Using round balloons means you'll have perfect circle chandeliers, you can use any kind of balloon but I wanted mine circular. Blow up how ever many balloons you want for chandeliers and tie yarn around the top for hanging.

Hang them on a pole or rack and don't forget to lay down tarp or trash bags. Things get a little messy in the next steps. Cover each balloon in Vaseline. This is so the yarn/glue doesn't stick to the baloon when you pop it in the end.

Mix up the glue with 1/2 cup of corn starch and 1/4 cup of water. The measurements don't really matter because I just threw a little bit of everything in and it turned out just fine :]

Dip the yarn in the gooey mix and begin to wrap it around the balloon. This is where having a second person is really helpful. Mike dipped the yarn and got the excess glue off while I wrapped.

Let them dry for several hours. It took forever to dry but luckily you can be doing other things and just forget about them. You want them completely dry when you pop them or they might just fall apart. I know this from experience because I have little patience and popped one too early. He died.

Once you pop them they should look all schnazzy like this guy. I haven't decided how I'm going to hang them or where I will hang them but I will eventually. I'm just excited to have finally finished the project I've been dying to do for months!

Do you think it would be okay to wrap the balloon in dry yarn, then roll it around in the mixture, and gently shake off the excess?  I'm trying to think of a way to make it less messy! lol

I love how whimsical these are. Sounds like a fun and relatively easy project I may have to delve into. I'm sad I didn't see these 4 months ago because they would have been perfect for my after-wedding brunch!

I made 12 but only 6 turned out - will have to try again. I found out that you need a LOT of glue for these puppies to hold up as well as spraying them with a clear varnish to help keep the shape once dried. Summer heat also doesn't help because you'll lose air in your balloons long before the glue dries! Yours look GREAT though! :)

soooo pretty! i just saw another post on these like 2 seconds ago.
possible wedding diy? i think yes. maybe i could put them on sticks and in the centerpieces! how sturdy is the yarn once it's dry?

Allison Kaye said...

Definitely a possible wedding centerpiece! It's pretty darn sturdy. I mean I wouldn't squeeze them lol but they'd definitely keep their shape attached to a stick for a centerpiece.

If you use PVA glue, you wouldn't need to seal them as it does it for you. It ends up being waterproof so you could wipe dust off.

Hi! I've been always wanting to make one of these coz they are so pretty but I'm worried about the dust/dirt that would accumulate on it.. Do you suggest anything to spray on top of it to make cleaning easier? Thank you.. =)

Allison Kaye said...

I used white yarn so there was no need to go any further once I had created
them. However, I know some people who spray paint them afterward to get
their desired color, in which case I would recomend finishing it off with a
clear spray sealant. You could just skip to the sealant if you wanted to
keep yours white in the end. I think that would help and make the
chandeliers smooth rather than yarn-like where dust can easily collect. Let
me know how it goes!

It really just worked the best for me. The thickness was nice but you could probably use any kind.

Happysunshine_14 said...

I have tried this idea but I kind of failed. I really don't know why. The yarn I used is thicker than softer that the one you are using and when it dries, it just doesn't form such a circular shape. What should I do?

Masa_n97 said...

how much glue do you reccomend?

Allison Kaye said...

I just dipped the yarn in the pan of glue and lightly squeezed off extra glue so it dries quicker

Sie_in_Berlinr said...

Is there a reason why you use acrylic yarn?

how cool! i would love to make some of these!

Elise Tissandier said...

Would the Elmer's  blue gel glue work as well? I'm buying some of that for another craft, and trying to avoid buying so much glue...
Thanks!

Allison Kaye said...

In theory it should work though I'm not sure how well the gel glue would mix with water
