DIY | Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

Mike and I were tired of paying for dishwasher detergent so often throughout the month so I went browsing around the Internet for a good homemade recipe for detergent. I had seen a bunch of tutorials for homemade laundry detergent and household cleaner so I figured it wouldn't be too hard to find one for the dishes. Sure enough, I found one. We tweaked it a little because we had a hard time finding some of the ingredients but here's what we made...

Everything you need for this recipe can be found at almost any grocery store. One: Tuperware dispenser. We picked one used for sugar that has a small spout as well as a larger opening. Two: One box of Borax. Find it in the household cleaning/laundry section along with item Three: One box of Washing Soda Four: 3 cups of Kosher Salt Five: 24 packets of unsweetened lemonade mix. You could also use citric acid but we couldn't find any for cheap.

Mix all the ingredients together in the Tupperware container and make sure to stir it well. Mike and I shook the container to mix it up which resulted in a white cloud of powder filling the room. You can decide whether that route is worth it or not :] I Mod Podged a little label onto the Tupperware to make it cute as well as distinguish it from it's look-alike sugar.

All together, this cost us about 15 dollars. But you only need to use one Tablespoon for each load of laundry so you can imagine how long with will last you. And other than the lemonade mix, all the ingredients are natural and don't harm the environment :] Pop it in the normal dishwasher dispenser and hit start! I think this mixture actually cleaned our dishes better than anything we have purchased in the past! Let me know if you try this out! Yay for buying bulk!
